Learn to Code with this Marble Powered Computer! | Turing Tumble Review

2 min read

What is a marble powered computer? Today Jarred takes a look at the Turing Tumble, an awesome STEM toy and resource that teaches how computer works, and foundational coding principles, using just plastic and marbles!

Disclaimer: Jarred wrote this script on his own, and while we (parents) did help him clarify a few things, this is written based on his experience and understanding of computer science and coding.

STEM Toys are so valuable in teaching kids (and adults) the foundational principles of computer science and coding, and the Turing Tumble takes that to the next level. Using only a plastic board, a bunch of plastic bits, and some marbles, the Turing Tumble lets you embark on an adventure through a comic book of challenges, each one getting more complex and teaching more principles. The Turing Tumble may seem simple at first, but it has the ability to count, form patterns, and create complex outputs using only those marbles and plastic bits.

A real computer chip works through a bunch tiny switches called transistors that use electricity to switch on and off – there’s no moving parts, just electrons. The Turing Tumble works in a similar way, but instead of transistors and electrons, the Turing Tumble has a bunch of plastic switches and marbles that work as a series of logic gates. The book has a bunch of challenges that require you to figure out how to arrange the plastic bits to get a specific output. It seems simple, but it will give your brain a really good workout.

From the Creator:

“Turing Tumble is unlike anything else out there. It actually lets kids see and feel how computers work. It lets them code without getting bogged down by language syntax, and it doesn’t require a phone or tablet to operate. It’s perfect for schools. Our hope is that Turing Tumble will be used by kids all over the world, finally letting them peek under the hood of computers and discover how they work.

Computers are everywhere. By giving kids a solid understanding of how computers work, we hope that they’ll be better equipped to work with computers in the future and that they’ll build the confidence to learn how other things around them work, too.”

We were provided with a Turing Tumble in exchange for our fair and honest review.
