TAIPEI — The humble convenience store plastic bag has never looked this good.

Asia’s latest fashion trend has people posing on social media wearing only plastic shopping bags.

The trend started in Taiwan, where young Taiwanese women have been uploading pictures of themselves clad in plastic bag “swimsuits.”

According to reports, a 27-year-old nightclub owner identified as Cheng-hsing took pictures of himself wearing tank-top versions of plastic bags as a joke and posted them on a closed Facebook group called “Baoliao Gongshe.” The practice then spread to other Facebook profiles, with photos of women wearing bags from 7-Eleven, which has thousands of stores all over Taiwan, proving especially popular.

Some netizens have praised the participants for raising awareness about the dangers of non-recyclable materials. Others criticized them for posting revealing photos and dumbing down Taiwanese society.
