Automotive Sculpture Build

1 min read

A simple slideshow showing the progression of my sculpture “Heritage of Speed”. Made entirely by hand out of .050 aluminum and oak, this sculpture is fabricated using the same techniques and tools as the original coach builder.

The heart of the sculpture is a 1/4 scale Ferrari 250 “pontoon fender” Testa Rossa. The entire piece stands nearly five feet tall and is over six feet long. The flowing abstract base features the track outlines and national flags from the 1958 championship including a “ghost” checker patterned podium.

Rather than simply duplicate an exact representation of the car, I tried to create a flowing, loose artistic statement. My goal was to deconstruct the car in a way that shows the original creation process of hand-formed aluminum over a wood buck yet somehow captures the beauty and essence of the legendary shape.
