2 min read
A 1953 Corvette. A traditional Volkswagen bus. A Beetle. A tail-finned cruiser right out of 1959. They resemble museum pieces, but they’re brand-new, constructed in China, and under the chrome they conceal plug-in hybrid systems, modern brakes and contemporary electronic devices.
In this docudrama, we inform the story of Songsan Motors, the Beijing motorbike club that decided to construct the cars the West ignored. They made it through a battle with BYD, the world’s largest EV manufacturer, and located a new home in Nanjing. We additionally go inside Juncheng, the Chinese manufacturing facility marking all new steel bodies for the Land Cruiser FJ40, the Ford Bronco, the Datsun 240Z and the VW bus from scans of the originals.
And the twist: these automobiles took place show in Los Angeles, at the heart of American auto culture. But American purchasers can’t acquire a single one.
