How to shoot a model doing a Hair Flip – Fashion Photography Tip
2 min read
The step-by-step way I create dramatic hair flip images with my fashion models and a behind the scenes look at a simple available light fashion shot for a models portfolio.
The model in this shot is a 19 year old college student. This is her second professional photo shoot and she has never done the head flips before. We spent about 5 minutes discussing the idea and doing a couple of practice flips to give her some feedback.
We found that in order to flip her head the natural movement had her pull the chin way back which meant that my low camera angle caused me to lose good eye contact, so the challenge became choreographing a flip that would raise her chin slightly but not too far. Eyes are VERY important to my photographs.
In a situation like this your model has NO idea how she looks. You can show her all the lcd previews in the world and it still doesn’t help her much. It is the photographers responsibility to be the models eyes and direct her to a great shot.
It is also important to note that these shots were not the result of the spray and pray technique. Each time the model flipped her head I shot 1 frame only. There is no substitute for learning good timing and anticipation techniques – so start practicing. If you want consistently good results – you can’t leave it to luck.
