Sonic in Hope Mills closes after grease fire

HOPE MILLS — A grease fire Saturday morning closed the Sonic on Hope Mills Road here.

The fire was reported at 7:02 a.m. There were no injuries reported.

Terry Cashwell, a Hope Mills firefighter, said the grease fire started in the kitchen over the fryers while staff was readying for breakfast. Smoke bellowed out of the hood system, which was unable to douse the flames.

He said employees at the restaurant used a fire-extinguisher and a small, commercial water hose to put out the fire.

The restaurant had to close so the kitchen can be cleaned, Cashwell said.

“It looked like a cloud of yellow dust covering the kitchen,” he said.
